Insects are the most abundant living organisms on our planet. To date, more than one million insect species have been discovered and described by entomologists. However, estimates put the total number of living insect species between six and ten million. Those estimates mean over 90% of the living animals on our planet would be insects. The biodiversity of insects is astounding. They can be found in virtually every environment on our planet. Some insects look very cute, while others look down right menacing. They can crawl, run, swim and fly. Some of them can bite, sting and through those mechanisms be downright deadly to humans.
Insects coming in of all colors, shapes, and sizes. The largest known insect is the giant weta (Deinacrida heteracantha) with a confirmed record weight of 1.8 ounces. The smallest known insect is the fairy wasp (Dicopomorpha echmepterygis) with an average body length of 186 micrometers. One of the most colorful insects in the world is the Picasso bug (Sphaerocoris annulus). The fastest insect is the tiger beetle (Rivacindela hudsoni) with a top running speed of 5.6 miles per hour. The deadliest insect in the world is the mosquito, it’s not venomous, but it’s a carrier and transmitter of blood born pathogens, like malaria, dengue and the Zika virus.
